Warriors Visit

We were lucky enough to have a visit from three players from the Warriors.  They were Jackson Frei, Eliesa Katoa and Paul Turner.  They were also joined by a community relations worker and a trainer.  They talked to us about nutrition, hydration, sleep.  There were lots of quizzes and prizes.

Duffy Theatre Visit

Today we were lucky enough to have a visit from the Duffy Theatre Troupe.  There was an actor playing Duffy and two actresses, Rhea and Neve, playing other roles.

The storyline of this year's play was:

Duffy likes a computer game that builds things, called 'Magic Bricks'. He is writing a book about it with the tips and tricks.

Duffy goes to stay with his aunty and cousin in the holidays and his cousin, Sam, is addicted to playstation games. She thinks Duffy is silly for reading.

Duffy tries to get Sam's attention but gets sucked into the video game after he wore nanas glasses and danced like her.

Duffy gets chased by the a character in the game called The Dismantler, they make friends after a while. Duffy has to find a way out of the game before he gets pixelated.

Duffy gets some helpers to make a word. The word is 'Inventor.'

Sam reads Duffy book to try to find a way to get Duffy out. Sam puts on nana's glasses and dances. She gets pulled into game too. Duffy is nearly pixelated.

Sam takes the book into game and they figure out that nana was a computer scientists. They get a clue that says, "Turn yellow to blue," They have to make a new word out of the blocks. Whetu is the word and that was nana's name.

Sam and Duffy realise that nana had invented the game. They have to do a special dance to get out of the game.

Nana was a self taught programmer who learnt how to programme from books at the library. Sam and Duffy decide reading is good and they are both going to write stories.

Get New Zealand Writing

We have been involved in writing some poems.  This is for the Get New Zealand Writing programme.  Our writing will get sent to a school in Hamilton.  We have been using the note.ly app to help us organise our work.  Here are some examples of our work.

Rugby Ready Number 2

Today we had our second rugby ready session.  Today we concentrated on the skills of falling when being tackled, moving our feet, passing backwards, having our hands ready and talking.  We did some skills and then a game with an imaginary ball.  This was really hard because we had to communicate well.

Crazy Catapults

For buddy class we had the chance to make catapults.  We had popsicle sticks, rubber bands, tin foil, glad wrap and a marshmallow to fire.  We had to aim at a target.

Pastel Patterns

To make this collaborative piece of art we had to work well together.  First we drew some shapes and then we joined the shapes with lines.  We learnt how to smudge pastels.  We were not allowed to have to side by side shapes the same colour.

Wonderful Weaving

Because we have still been working on our group skills we have continued to do some amazing group art pieces.  One of those pieces was to do some collaborative weaving.

First we had to make our strips of paper to weave.  We were allowed two colours.

Then we chose the ones we wanted to go down and glued them onto our backing paper.  After that we had to weave our strips of paper.  Once we were finished we glued down all the ends.

We also made our frames.

Mathletics Masters

Every Friday we have the winners of the Mathletics awards for the week announced.  This week we won the gold and silver medal and the trophy for the 'Class of the Week'.

Here is Michaela with the gold medal and trophy, Tory with the silver medal and Marvin (R8) with the bronze medal.

Rugby Ready

Last Thursday we had our first session of Rugby Ready.  This is a programme run by the CRFU to help us develop skills before the rugby season starts.

Two girls from Broadfields School, Poppy and Talula, had been getting donations of boots, mouthguards and weetbix for the people who needed them.  These were given out before the first session.

During the session we had 3 coaches.  They were Andy, Kayleigh and Blair.  We did a lot of work on passing and having our hands ready.  We then played a game of touch at the end.

It is a great, fun way to improve our skills.

More Lunchtime Mania

Tory, Sean and Bryce chose to run the lunchtime activity of ten pin bowling with the juniors last week.  It was hard work to quickly set up the pins so everyone could have turns.  Xaviar also helped by giving out coloured stickers to show how many pins they had knocked down.

Three Legged Races at Lunchtimes

One of the lunchtime activities that happened last week was Nevaeh, Freya and Venice running three legged races with the juniors.  This was a great event that required a lot of co-operation.

Friday Mufti

On Friday the 22nd of March we had a mufti day at school.  The theme was 'Colour Your Day."  The reason for this mufti day was to support families and Muslim communities following the tragic events of 15th March.  Many people from the Muslim community came for morning tea and staff wore headscarfs to show their support.

After lunch on Friday we all went over to the high school to have help the high school make the word Aroha.

Brett Fairweather Visit

On Wednesday the 20th of March the creator of 'Jump Jam', Brett Fairweather, came to school.  He did three Jump Jam dances with the whole school and answered some questions we had about his life.  Here are some pictures of us doing Jump Jam.

Silhouette Art

This week we have been working on a group art project that used our silhouettes and paint.  We had our photos taken and then printed out.  After that we cut them out and painted the back of them.  We had to use different tint.  Tints are made by adding white to a hue (colour).

We are continuing to develop our skills to work in groups and use strategies to calm down when we are getting frustrated.  Some of the strategies we have looked at are voicing our concerns, getting some exercise, writing down our feelings and counting up and back.

School Biathlon

Last Thursday we had our school Biathlon.  This was where we had to bike/scooter around a course and then run around a course.

In the morning many of the pupils from Room 7 helped to set up the course.  They had to draw lots of arrows to show the way.  Then some pupils had to take junior classes around the course.

In the afternoon all the students got their bikes and scooters and moved them to the transition area.  Then they moved to the gym to wait for their race.  In the gym there was music to sing to and some jump jam songs as well.

It was great to see everyone doing their personal best when competing.  Those people without bikes or scooters just ran a shorter course.

Room 7 has some great results.  The people who got first place got a big certificate and everyone else who took part got a participation one.

Touch Teams

Today was the last practice for the touch teams as we only have one game left next week.  We play our games against teams from other schools and clubs.  We have had some great wins this year.
It has been a great season with all players gaining a lot of new skills and the ability to work with others.  A huge thank you to the coaches and parents that have supported us this year.

Lunchtime Super Sports

This week we have begun to have sports monitors rostered on for lunchtimes.  Year 5 and 6 children volunteered to run different activities for seniors and juniors.  So far this week Ahyan and Nuu have run gymnastics for juniors, Jaedun and Tory have run dodgeball for seniors and Venice and Nevaeh have run sack races for juniors.

Here are some pictures of the sack races from today.
