Marvellous Monsters

We are continuing to read the book 'Fing' for buddy class.  In the chapters we read last week there were some amazing creatures including a 'Honkopotamus', a 'Helephant', 'Wing Wong birds' and 'Crococroco'.  With our buddy class we designed some of our own marvellous monsters.

Zones Cross Country

On Thursday the 16th of May 4 pupils from Room 7 competed in the Zone Cross Country.  They all went and tried their personal best competing against the best runners from all the schools in our zones.  It was great to see them supporting each other.

Free Rams Tickets

Hornby Primary has, once again, been lucky enough to be given some tickets for the Canterbury Rams vs The Southland Sharks game at Horncastle Arena.  Here is Alan from the Rams organisation presenting the tickets to some of our basketball players.

Collaborative Instruction Writing

This week we have been focusing on procedure writing.  One of the activities we did was to take some instructions that had been cut up and work as a group to put it back in order.  Here we are collaborating to get our instructions about 'How to Make a Mummy' in the correct order.

Making Canopic Jars

While learning about how mummies are made we also learnt about Canopic Jars.  These jars were used to store the organs of the people being mummified.  Each jar had a different god's head on it.  The shapes were a baboon, a falcon, a jackal or a person.

We have been making examples of Canopic jars by using papier mache.

Apple Mummification

This week we have been looking at how Mummies are made.  We have started to mummify an apple.  To do this we had to choose how much salt and baking soda we needed to put in it.  We weighed our apple to start with and put it in the baking soda and salt. Then we weighed it after 3 days.  The apples had all got lighter and they were looking "disgusting," according to Angus.  We will weigh them again next week.

Buddy Class Week 2

We are continuing to read the book "Fing" with our buddy class.  This week the story detailed some punishments tat Myrtle Meek does to her parent when they don't do what they want.   We used Google Drawings to make up our own punishments.

Hornby Working Mens Club Sausage Sizzle

We were lucky enough to have the Hornby Working Men's Club come to school on Friday.  They provided sausages for all the students.  Some were lucky enough to get more than one sausage.

Nuu - Harcourts Hornby Hero

Every month a pupil from Hornby Primary receives the Harcourts Hornby Hero award.  This month it was give to Nuu for his manner to other pupils including helping pupils with their reading and running with pupils to finish relays so they don't have to finish alone.  Here is Nuu receiving his award.

Basketball - First Week of Games

On Friday Hornby Primary had three teams begin playing basketball at Middleton Grange School.

The Heat and the Hotshots went down in close games and the Havoc had a victory.  There are 8 students from Room 7 in the teams.

100 Word Count Writing

This week for 100 word count writing we were given five words to include in a piece of writing.

The 5 words were

SALT   BROWN MELTED   GIRAFFE GREASY

Here are Venice and Talisa's pieces of writing

I was watching a national baking competition. It included pies, cakes, cupcakes and more deserts
but the most important and the most greatest desert of the whole wide city was the chocolate
brown giraffe. Many people had tried the recipe but nobody ever succeeded. I started baking it
and after a few hours I finished! It was a bit greasy but it tasted good. I put a bit of salt in it and
left it alone to get more ingredients. I came back, but it was too late it had already melted. Then
I knew my crazy friend ate it.
I was going to the zoo with my family for the holidays . It was a bright sunny day and we were in a good mood. As we entered we saw the amazing animals. While we were there I saw a giraffe. They had brown spots and long necks. It started to get late so we went home and purchased drinks with ice in it and the ice melted in to water. We ate dinner and talked about what we saw I could taste the salt in the dinner. We were going to sleep and I washed my tired, greasy hands.

Cyber Smart - Finding our about Miss Morgan and Cooper

Last Friday we were seeing how much information we could find out about people on line.  It was interesting to see how much we could find out about Miss Morgan and Cooper by just reading a few posts.

When we post on line we need to make sure we are not sharing too much information about ourselves.  We need to keep safe online.

Here is a Padlet we made that shows the information we found out.

Miss McDonald has a Science Degree and is now training to be a teacher.  She has 2 young boys and enjoys hockey.

So far she has been getting to know everyone in the class and is taking some groups.  We are sure it is going to be fantastic having someone so enthusiastic in the class.

Buddy Class Term 2 - Reading Fing by David Walliams

This term for buddy class buddy class we are using the book 'Fing' by David Walliams.  Both classes are reading the book in their class rooms.  Then when we come together on a Friday we do an activity that relates to the book.  Last week we made finger puppets of the main characters in the book.

We had to make:
Myrtle Meek - a very spoil young girl who always wants more
Mr Meek - Myrtle's father, a librarian and a very 'meek' person
Mrs Meek - Myrtle's mothers, also a librarian and very 'meek'
