Hieroglyphs

Today we learnt about hieroglyphs.  This is a writing system used in Ancient Egypt.  It uses pictures for words and letters.  Here is an example of a hieroglyphic alphabet.


Then we started to make cartouches of our names.  A cartouche is a design drawn around the names of people.  Important people had cartouches made.  Drawing a cartouche around a person's name meant that the person would live forever and be protected forever.  Here we are making our cartouches.

Life Education Session 2

Today we had our second session in the Life Education trailer.  We were talking about the steps for empathy. 

The steps are
1. Watch and listen to the words and body language
2. Remember when you felt the same way
3. Imagine what it would be like to be in that situation
4. Ask how the person is feeling
5. Show you care through your thoughts and actions.

We also talked about being a by-stander or an up-stander.

By-standers stand by and watch bullying, they don't do anything to stop it and the might even join in.
Up-standers recognise when something is wrong and does something to try and fix it.

We were given some cares to identify if people were bystanders or up-standers.

The last thing we talked about today was the ABCD to work through when having a disagreement.
A - Agree that there is a problem and what it is
B - Breathe, recognise where you are at and if you're ready for a conversation,  you might need a break before sorting out the problem.
C - Carefully listen to the other person and understand their problem the Clearly tell your side of the story using an 'I' statement (in as few words as possible).
D - Decide together how to move on.  Try to get a win-win solution where both sides are happy with the way the problem was sorted.

We had a sitting down dance party and heard some more Harold jokes to finish the session.

Ancient Egypt

During the first half of this term we are finding out about Ancient Egypt for topic.  So far we have talked about where Egypt is and the fact it is by the Nile River.   We have also started looking at the roles people took in Egyptian society.  Here is Jaedun's work so far.

We have also done some work on important words we find the Ancient Egyptian Civilisation. Here is Venice's work showing this.

Life Education

This week we are lucky enough to have Siobhan from Life Education at school.  We have a session where we were talking about feelings and how body language can show how someone is feeling.  This is a great continuation on our work about the 'Zones of Regulation' that we did last term.



When we were there Harold told us some jokes.

Why did the skeleton not cross the road?
He didn't have the guts.

Why did the toilet paper roll down the hill?
To get to the bottom.

Why do gorillas have such big noses?
Because they have big fingers.

Rooms 1-4 Are Going!

We have started the next stage of the rebuild process.  All the classrooms from Room 1- 4 have been emptied and are fenced off in the first stage of preparation for being pulled down. 
We also got a new container to hold some things while we wait for the new building.

Tin foil, String and Sharpie Art

The last activity we did for art this term was tin foil, string and sharpie art.  This is a great one for making sure we have a 'Growth Mindset'.  Even if we feel we are not good at art YET we could all achieve success with this art.

First we drew a pattern, it could not be too complicated.  Then we had to put string on our pattern.  This was the messy bit.  Once we had done that we covered our pattern with tinfoil and pressed down so we could see the string lines.  We then chose 3 colours of Sharpie to colour in with.

This art looks bright and amazing on our classroom wall.

Check the Clues - Maths

On the last Thursday of the term we tried a new activity in maths called Check the Clues.  This involved us working in a group and reading our clue.  We had a 100's board and crossed off the numbers that the clues told us to.  It was quite hard work but we managed to work out all the answers.

Shared Lunch

On Thursday we had our shared lunch for the term.  We had to bring something healthy to eat.  Our families were welcome to come and join us.  Unfortunately the weather was poor so we had the food in Room 4 and ate in Rooms 1-3.

Health Forum

We were lucky enough to be invited to the Health Forum in the Gym.  This was a morning run by the health leaders from the High School and from Hornby Primary.  The health leaders had all chosen different modules to present and we were allowed to choose two to attend. 

The modules we had the choice from were
Emotional Intelligence (this involved matching cards and learning new names for emotions)
Emotional Intelligence in Art (this involved drawing portraits, doing origami or mindfulness colouring in)
Diabetes and St Johns (this was a chance to learn some basic first aid and to learn information about diabetes)
Sport Problem Solving (this was about solving problems in games and discussions about rules, one of the games was Sneak Up Granny)
Filipino Dance (this was where we used some traditional Filipino dance moves to modern music)

We also all did some fitness activities together and did some reflection about our morning.  There was a great morning tea provided for us too.

The Egg-citing Egg Hats

We had to be really creative in buddy class in week 9.  Our task was to make a hat out of newspaper and sellotape.  The hat had to hold an egg.

After we had finished our hat we had to go through an obstacle course with all group linked up.

Unfortunately 4 groups did not get all the way through.
